I once had a mentor who...

Never having had a specific mentor relationship with anyone, I admit to being in a conundrum over today's prompt, I once had a mentor who..,  for Blog Everyday in May.

In my career I have certainly had experienced and trusted advisers. Each has taught me something worthwhile about work or myself, in some cases both. Hopefully they know who they are and that I am forever grateful to them.

Whenever I think of mentors I am reminded of a Seinfeld episode and it goes a little something like this...

Jerry is dating a protege, Abby. Another comedienne, Kenny Bania, is dating her mentor. Jerry is outraged, believing he should be dating a mentor instead of this hack comedienne, Bania! After seeing Bania's act, Jerry's girlfriend loses all respect for her mentor and fires her. Bania's girlfriend also subsequently dumps him after seeing his act.

Abby ends up choosing George as a mentor, much to everyone's surprise. And Jerry becomes mentor to the hack comedienne, Bania.

George, always with an ulterior motive, uses Abby to summarise a Risk Management textbook because he has to give a lecture on the subject to his company as his resume states he is an expert in the field. In turn, Jerry attempts to enlighten Bania on the quirkiness of Ovaltine.

When their information gets mixed up, George ends up lecturing his company on Ovaltine and Bania does a bit on Risk Management, queue hilarity.

Have you had a mentor?
What was your experience?

You want a Christmas card....here is your Christmas card!

I love to send Christmas cards to my family and friends. Since having kids I am now one of those people that shamelessly puts their picture on the front of the Christmas card each year. This year it was a lovely photo of our two cherubs at the beach.

Every time I have made one of these cards I am reminded of the Seinfeld episode when Elaine puts her picture on a Christmas card.

For those non-Seinfeld fans out there, here is a brief synopsis.

Jerry is dating a Calvin Klein model who sends him a Christmas card with her photo. Elaine says she should do something like that. Kramer chimes in offering to take her picture, so off they go to Kramer's apartment to take the photo for Elaine's Christmas card.

A few scenes later, Jerry receives the card from Elaine, opens it and notices......a nipple!

Elaine's shirt had gapped during the taking of the photo and exposed a nipple. She had sent this card to hundreds of people, except George.

George is very indignant not to have received a card.....the following clip is what ensued and is definitely the funniest clip from this episode.

Do you put a family photo on your Christmas cards?
Have you ever inadvertently sent out a photo showing more than you should?

Wednesday Words - Seinfeld quotes

My all time favourite TV show, at the moment, is Seinfeld. I have all the seasons on DVD and have watched them too many times - Little Miss 4 even comments to Hubby, "Mummy is watching Seinfeld again".

It became my therapy when I was at home in those early days when Little Miss 4 was born. Those long, long days of crying, feeding, crying, feeding. It was my chance to escape my own reality into that of Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George.

Today I am sharing some of the quotes that I find particularly funny from some of my favourite episodes. I am really in need of a good laugh. Hopefully it will give you a laugh or remind you of your favourite TV show.

"You're through, Soup Nazi. Pack it up. No more soup for you. Next!"
- Elaine, in "The Soup Nazi"
"I think we really need to be in front of the television set. You take TV out of this relationship, it is just torture."
- George, to his mother Estelle, in "The Fusilli Jerry"

"That's karma."
"No, that's Kramer."
- Elaine and Jerry, in "The Truth"
"It's more like a full-body dry heave set to music."
- George, on Elaine's dancing style, in "The Little Kicks"

"Do women know about shrinkage?"
"What do you mean, like laundry?"
"No..."
"Like when a man goes swimming... Afterwards..."
"It shrinks?"
"Like a frightened turtle."
"Why does it shrink?"
"It just does."
"I don't know how you guys walk around with those things."
- George, Elaine and Jerry, in "The Hamptons"

"You want a Christmas card? You want a Christmas card? Here's your Christmas card!!!"
- Elaine to George, as she grabs his head and pulls it into her chest, in "The Pick"

"What am I... hard of smelling?"
- Elaine to Jerry, in "The Smelly Car"

"I think they might have sutured that thing to your brain."
- Elaine, disdainful of George's new toupee, in "The Beard"

"No, I don't have a square to spare. I can't spare a square."
- Jane, in "The Stall"

Get ready family...Mummy will be watching some Seinfeld episodes tonight :).

Do you have any favourite TV show quotes or favourite TV shows?

Friday Frivolity - when is it ok to...

This week I received a text message from my sister-in-law, Sister B, it read:

I have a subject for your blog!
When is it ok to pick your nose?
I'm on the train and a guy is really going for it....might hit brain matter soon.

Image from here
I laughed. I could just see Sister B sitting on the train watching a guy pick his nose and trying not to laugh out loud whilst texting me. It also got me thinking - when is it OK to pick your nose?

Little Miss 4 is a nose-picker, as are all her friends, as we all probably were when we were four years old. It seems at this young age there is no fear of embarrassment or social shun if you are caught picking your nose and even eating what you find in there!

I am not too sure when it becomes taboo to pick your nose, possibly when you go to school and actually listen to the teacher who tells you to get your finger out of there (because clearly kids don't listen to their parents about such matters).

But it does become a social taboo to pick your nose in public as you get older. It also raises another question, where are you going to put anything you find in there?

In my opinion, it is OK to pick your nose in the privacy of your own bathroom and with a tissue. Call me crazy though cause I don't think it is OK to go the pick on the train or bus, in the car, or on the street without a tissue. Using a tissue though could be deemed OK in a public setting if it is an emergency.

And if you are trying to woo a Calvin Klein model, don't even scratch the side of your nose in the car - just ask Jerry Seinfeld.....

When do you think it is OK to pick your nose?
